In the broadest sense, cancer refers to over 277 different types of cancer disease. Scientists have identified multiple stages of cancer, suggesting that many gene mutations cause pathogenesis of the disease. These mutations of the genes cause abnormal proliferation of the cells. Genetic defects triggered by descent or inherited factors play a crucial role in boosting cell growth. Additional knowledge has been obtained with the assistance of technological advances in bioinformatics and molecular techniques which can be useful for early detection and proper treatment. In recent years, molecular genetic studies have identified mechanisms for carcinogenesis. The results of these studies contributed to a deeper understanding of the role of genetic disorders in the development of cancers. Our goal in this book is to explore the molecular and cellular aspects of cancer.
